MORE about Life:

Before I left for Alaska, I had a very, happy birthday. My online quilt group did a birthday block swap. We chose the block that we wanted made and the colors we wanted for our block. I chose the block called Sunlight and Shadow. Here are 2 of 20 that I received from wonderful ladies all over the world!! What a nice birthday, huh?

After returning home from Alaska. I went with Ilene Kendrick, my quilting friend, to the Southeast Idaho State Fair. We had entered some quilts in the fair. Well, Ilene took the best of show for her quilted pillow!! She also took some other blue ribbons for her work!! Way to go Ilene!! Here is here pillow and another beautiful quilt she did.

Then, I had another wonderful surprise!! A lady came up to me and asked me my name. I asked, "What is your name?" She said, "Kathryn Evans". Oh, my goodness!! Kathryn, joined my online quilt group and she recognized me by my "cartoon" self portrait. She hung out with us the rest of the day while we looked and looked at all the quilts. She won a blue ribbon on her quilt that she entered! Here is Kathryn and her quilt. What fun!!! I drew a dotted outline around her winning quilt. Way to go Kathryn!!!

I had entered my "Barn Raising" Quilt. I got a 4th place on it, but the judges picked it as one of their favorites. I got a gift certificate to a quilt shop in Rexburg. Here I am in my living glory!!

I also entered my Grandma's Apron table topper and got 3rd place, I think. I had so much fun doing this one.

Oh!! This was so fun!! On our quilt group, we did an "Ugly" fabric swap. We chose an ugly fat quarter that we thought was ugly and sent to to someone. They were to make something with the "Ugly" fabric. I got some ugly fabric from Joleen on our group. As it turns out, Joleen goes to the fair every year. I told her that I was going to enter her project at the fair. She would have to go look for it and see if she could find it. Well, she found it! I acually got 2nd place for it. I don't think her fabric was so ugly!! It was fun having Joleen look for her project. I sent it off to her after the fair. Glad I got a picture of it before hand. Thanks for the fun, Joleen!!

I found a picture of the cutest witch table topper. I just had to have this for my own table. I went to work and developed a pattern. I shared the pattern with my online quilt group. I think this Classy Witch friends topper turned out so cute!!

Well, I can't think of anything I missed! I am continually working on something new, so until next time!!

A Bit about Life

Oh, my!! I just looked at my blog and I am WAY behind! A few things have happened since I last wrote. I have been on quite a road trip. I left August 16th for the longest trip of my life! My daughter and family (yes, the grandkids went too!) moved to Ft. Greely, Alaska from Boise, Idaho. I flew over to Boise to help them move out of there home. Then we started on our trek of 2800 miles over the Alaska Hiway.

I drove Eric's truck as far as Tacoma, Washington where it was put on a ferry bound for Alaska. Then I got in Amber's car to help with the kids. While we were in Tacoma, Caleb and his family came from Portland to spend the day with us. After a half a day trying to find a parking spot for a HUGE UHAUL Truck and trailer, we got to spend some time at Fisherman's Warf with Caleb, Bonnie and Bonnie's girls. Here is a nice picture of them. It was fun to finally get to meet them.

The drive was beautiful especially through the Yukon Territory. Here is a picture of the sign I took when we FINALLY left the Yukon Territory.

While we were driving, we came across this unusal forest. It is called the Sign Post Forest. I am wondering where they got all of these signs. Did they steal them? Is that not a Federal Offense? Just wondering? Anyway, it was very interesting to see SO many road signs!!! This picture doesn't even show HALF of them. It is literally a FOREST of them!!

There were a ton of beautiful lakes along the road while driving through the Yukon Territory. Here is one of them. The picture really doesn't do it justice. The view was AWE inspiring to say the least!

After 7 days of driving, we FINALLY made it to Alaska and back to the good ole' USA! It was so good to see a road sign that read 55 MPH instead of 100 KPH!! My brain was a bit confused with the metric measurments. And then there were the LOONEY'S (I'm probably spelling it wrong...) Anyway, a Looney, Luni, Luney? is a brass colored coin that the Canadians use for a dollar. Again, I was confused!

Here is Jonathan and Shandeigh indicating we have reached Alaska!!! Oh happy day!!!

We drove into Ft Greely late at night and stayed in lodging there on the base. Eric's "sponsor" had arranged breakfast foods, milk and drinking water for us for the next morning. I was impressed! We spent the next couple of nights in this lodging while Amber and Eric found a home on base. Then the moving in began. There was a group of seven men from their branch that came to help. Again, I was so thankful for good people who would give of their time to help!!

After getting them settled somewhat.... it was time to go to Fairbanks where I would catch the plane that would fly me all night to Salt Lake City, Utah. Before going to Fairbanks, we drove to North Pole, Alaska, the home of Santa Claus. Here are a few pictures of our visit with Santa. Here is Shandeigh reaching into Santa's mailbox to see what the other kids of the world wanted to tell Santa.

Here is a picture of Shandeigh with Santa. He treated her so special. I always knew that Santa was a kind and jolly elf. I was really able to see his generosity first hand! The boys were too shy to go sit on Santa's lap.

Here was one of Santa's Reindeer. The kids thought maybe he was Rudolph!

And here I am at the doorstep to Eric and Amber's home saying goodbye to the Shandeigh, Jonathan, Paden and Quinn. Thank goodness for cell phones, email and web cams!!!

After flying all night from Fairbanks, Alaska to Salt Lake City, UT. I met my long, lost husband, Roger at about 9:30 in the morning. He picked me up and we drove (again!) to Farmington, New Mexico. We picked up 7 boxes of roasted $chili peppers and bagged and froze them. We stayed 2 nights with Roger's parents and then got back in the car (AGAIN!) and drove home on labor day. All in all I figured road trip miles (not including flight miles) was close to 4400 miles!! Wow, what a trip!!!

A Bit About Life:

Happy 4th of July to all USA friends! What a beautiful summer this is turning out to be. In southeast Idaho, we have had steady rain for about 2 weeks! The weather has finally turned and the sun is shining. Our resevoirs are full to overflowing and we ARE thankful for that! We have needed rain for the past few years.

My daughter and family will be coming to spend a few days. Our plans are to go to Glacier Park tomorrow if all goes well. DH works up that direction and said it is beautiful and wants us to see it as well. I am excited to do that!

I have been watching my other daughter's kids the past couple of days. My almost 10 year old grandson challenged me to a rematch of Monopoly. Sorry to say, I beat his socks off AGAIN!! We'll see if he wants a rematch today or wants to move on to another game.

Last month I showed you a picture of the unfinihsed Log Cabin quilt and had intentions of completing the quilting and make pillow shams. I am happy to say I finished!! I got it done just in time for my husbands birthday on the 13th of June. You can see how it turned out below.

A few months back, I mentioned that I was making a birthday present for my daughter. She will be here and I will give her the gift so I can post it here. If she sees it before she gets here.... oh well... It is a pattern from Kim Diehl entitled Every Heart Beats True. I scaled the pattern down to be used as a table topper. My daughter loves Americana decor and I thought this would be perfect for her kitchen table. What do you think?

Quilting Views and Tips:

I saw the cutest wall hanging. It was of some appliqued aprons. They were done in 1930's fabrics and then embelished with buttons, ric rac, yo-yo's, etc. It was so darn cute! I have been working on my own version. I'll let you see what I come up with.

I have also been thinking of a full size sampler quilt only done in miniature. I'm thinking of about 3 inch finished blocks. Somehow, the "lttle" stuff really appeals to me. I love to do paper piecing which allows these tiny miniatures to be so precise! Again, I'll show you what I come up with.

I have almost finished a set of embroidered herbs. My plans are to make quilt blocks and use the six inch embroidered blocks as the center of each quilt block.

It seems that I always have something mulling around through my mind. I love it when the plan actually comes together!!

New Patterns:

I have the August element for the Month after Month wall hanging ready. I call it Sunny Sunflower. What would August be without a Sunflower. You can purchase the pattern from my website by clicking HERE.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

I need to announce that my website - QuiltingForLess.com will probably come to end sometime next month. It has been a long uphill climb and a lot of hard work. It has been fun but "fun" doesn't pay the bills. I will continue to send out the Block of the Month patterns to those who have signed my guestbook. I love developing new patterns and will more than likely have a new Block of the Month for 2010. I will continue my blog and my online qult group.

A Bit About Life:

May has been a whirlwind month! This month (May 29) we celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary. I cannot believe how fast the years have gone by. We were able to go to Yellowstone, where we spent our honeymoon those many years ago. We love to go to the West Gate Playmill theatre. The play was Footloose and was a very cute performance. Then we went to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and went to the Bar J Chuckwagon. We always love that place. It is good food and great cowboy entertainment. We did get to celebrate early as it was Memorial Day Weekend.

I FINALLY got my HUGE KING SIZE quilt ready to quilt. I was able to work on it for a while yesterday. Here is a picture of what it looks like before quilting. I am very pleased on how it is turning out so far. I was a bit worried about the size and being able to machine quilt it, but it is working GREAT!!

I have been working on our Birthday Block Swap. This has been a blast making so many different blocks. It was so fun, that we started another group and a lot of the ladies joined that one too! I can't wait until my birthday to see how everyone made the block that I requested. Hurry, AUGUST!! LOL!

My granddaughter, who is diabetic was in need of more packs to carry her insulin pump in. We had gone shopping for fabric some time back and I let her choose her own fabric. I got six of them made up and sent them to her without taking a picture!!! Oh, how I LOVE technology!! I called my daughter and asked her if she could take a picture and email it. She said the camera was with her husband, but she could take one with her phone. And.... here are five of the six packs. My granddaughter is wearing the other one. She was so glad to get them and loved how "her" fabric turned out. These have been such a life saver for her. She just wears them around her waste like a belt and she can run, jump and play all she wants without dropping her pump. And I guarantee, she does a LOT of all three!!

Quilting Views and Tips:

Last month I told you how inspired I was with Bonnie Hunter's scrap "using" system. This last month I was able to put to use this system. I had quite a few novelty fabric pieces that I wasn't sure how to use them. Well.... with Bonnie's help at quiltville.com, I put together this "Scrappy Happy House" quilt. I used the scraps that I cut as per Bonnie's system. It went together so fast and I was able to use up a TON of those novelty fabrics that I had. Here is how the top turned out.

Speaking of Novelty Fabrics.... A couple of quilting friends and I swapped 3 1/2 inch squares of novelty fabric. We made sure that there were 2 of all the fabrics squares we cut. Then we pieced them together to make an I Spy quilt. The quilt also doubles as a matching game. Here is my I Spy quilt which the grandkids already love! I had some squares left so I put the leftover squares to use on the back of the quilt. Here are the pictures of the top and back of my I Spy Quilt.

New Patterns:

This month I have 2 new patterns for the Month after Month wall hanging. The June element is "Building a Barn" and the July element is "Sweet Land of Liberty". These elements can be added to the Month after Month Wall Hanging or use as a table topper or a seperate hanging wall decoration. Hope you enjoy them. Click HERE to find the patterns.

A Bit About Life:

Holy smokes! April has come and gone in a hurry! Can you believe that we got about a foot and a half of SNOW on Sunday? When we went to church the ground was covered and it was snowing like a Banshi! When we got out of church at 2:00 pm. It was almost all melted. What can I say? I live in Idaho! :o)

I have been so busy this month. I finished a quilt for someone special for Christmas. These blocks have been in a drawer for a couple of years. In all honesty, I hated them. The colors all seemed to be so dark. I was seriously thinking about giving them away, or better yet... finding a home for them in the TRASH can. I have a great quilting friend who encouraged me to get them out and do something with them. I finally did and I have to admit that the results are so much better than I expected. In fact, it is the most gorgeous quilt I have made! I especially love the big flower border. Thanks to Kim Diehl for her insperation for the applique design.

I wanted the back different. Not a standard piece of fabric, but something.... I decided to make one LARGE block and then border it to fit the top. So, I made a HUGE Bear's Claw block for the back.

I also decided to go completely outside the box on this one and quilt every block differently. I did the whole thing without a pattern and just thought about the block and what might look good for the quilting. Here is the pictures of the quilt. I am calling it the Royal Sampler. I think it is very rich looking. Let me know what you think!

Quilting Views and Tips:

I have also been inspired to TAME my fabric scraps. Bonnie Hunter and Quiltville.com has been my inspiration. I have been using her system to cut scraps into blocks, bricks and strips. I can hardly wait to try her leader and ender idea. Go check out her website. Maybe you will be inspired too! I have been cutting for days and hope to see the end soon. Then I will be able to keep up as each new project evolves and I will have a beautiful "Scrappy" quilt as a BONUS!!

A Bit About Life:

I can't believe that it is April already! Sunday, we had one of our worst weather days! It was blowing and snowing. I would call that blizzard conditions! I had to get my winter coat out to wear to church. I thought I had put it away for the winter! I should know by now after living almost my whole life in Idaho that I should expect that kind of weather!

I have been busy this last month quilting up a storm! I was in the process of working on my "Barn Raising" Quilt and got sidetracked. I am sure no one else ever gets sidetracked! LOL!! I found a pattern from EQ6 using their kalaidascope disk. The pattern is called Congregation of Poppies. This really intrigued me. I love to do paper piecing and use up my scraps. (somehow, I never use them ALL. Scraps begat SCRAPS!) Anyway, here is my Congregation of Poppies. It was even featured on the EQ blog. You can scroll down and read the article HERE I loved the color of the Poppies on the black background. I had fun drawing the vines, leaves and poppy buds. They are all hand applique. What do you think?

I did finish my "Barn Raising" Quilt. I think I mentioned in a previous post that I was making a quilt in honor of my Great Grandmother Lillie Viola Chicken House. I made a scrapbook page entitled "BRAVE betrays her name". Here is the scrapbook page.

I wanted to make a quilt with chickens on it in honor of her name. I am proud to be part CHICKEN! LOL! Here is a picture of the quilt I made in her honor. I call it "Barn Raising".

When we had our local quilt show in January, I took a class from Delene. She gave us an embroidery pattern for the saying, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without" She also gave us some creative ideas and instruction on how to make a cute wall hanging. I love that concept and have learned it all my life from my mother and grandmother. Here is my version of Delene's Wall Hanging...

I am working on something for a birthday present. I can't show it now, but I will "After" the birthday! Shhhhhh.... LOL!!

A Bit About Life:

Can you believe that March is here? Holy smokes! The months are flying by! I just returned from spending a few days with some of my grandkids. They were fun and were very good! My four year old Paden is so funny. He wears glasses and of course looks so cute. Some lady at the store told him that he was the cutest boy she had ever seen. His comment was, and I quote, "Yeah, and I am smart, too!" These grandkids are so fun! Here are the grandkids in Boise. (Okay, their parents are here too...)

I am so excited to tell you about this! I have started a quilting forum. I love my quilt group that I go to once a month, but I thought how fun it would be to have one online that I could go to anytime I wanted. I have started a group for our next Mystery. You will be able to post pictures of your progression of the mystery and share comments. Click HERE for the Quilt Forum. I hope you will join in the FUN!! A Bit About Life

First of all I want to wish everyone a HAPPY VALENTIEN'S DAY! I am writing this post from my daughter's home. Four of my nine grandchildren are here. My sweet granddaughter, Shandeigh, just brought us a handmade valentine. She is so inventive. She should get a job with Hallmark! I told her that I would take her shopping for fabric for her pump pack. She is diabetic and I designed a pattern to carry her pump in. I have chosen cute fabrics for her before, but thought it would be fun to let her choose. She is excited! Me too! This will be fun. I'll post a picture of the pump packs when I get them done. If there is interest, I could share the pattern.

These last two week have been pretty productive for me! I am starting on a new quilt which I am calling "Barn Raising". I am in the process of making chicken blocks for part of it. I have this great desire to make a quilt with chickens. My great grandmother's maiden name is Chicken. When anyone calls me Chicken, I am honored! LOL! Anyway, here is one of the chicken blocks. I will keep you updated on the progression of this quilt.

I have also been cutting out I Spy blocks to make a quilt to have for the grandkids. I have two other quilting friends who are sharing their cute fabric as well. We have around 150 blocks each of 3 1/2 inch blocks cut. We are thinking up all kinds of games to play with this quilt. Do you have any ideas?

I have another element for the Month After Month wall hanging. This one I call "Butterflies Meet". I have been trying different techniques of applique. This one I did the needle turn method. The Chicken block I did my own version of the freezer paper applique. Both methods are fun, but I think I like my freezer paper version the best. This picture really doesn't do this wall hanging justice, but I hope you get the idea! You can find the pattern HERE

A Bit About Life

This last two weeks have been a buzz and so much fun! It was the 10th anniversary for the Quilt Show in Shelley. It was the best! I don't know if you remember that I had entered some quilt blocks among many beautiful ones that were entered. I ended up winning 3rd place on the quilt block below.

Then to top it off, my name was drawn to win HALF of these beautiful block. I received 24 blocks made by such wonderful quilters! Take a look at these beautiful blocks.

I also was privileged to teach two classes. One was on making fabric chenille and the other one was on paper piecing. I also got my picture in the paper. Does that mean I'm famous? (Highly unlikely!)

Here is the quilt I made and added the chenille. It is called "Fresh Cut in Chenille". The pattern is available HERE.

These little Needle Books are what I demonstrated for the paper piecing class. We made the striped heart one on the right. I sometimes like to sneak in a little surprise with my newsletter. I learned so many tips at our quilt show from other quilters who presented demonstration. I wish I had a recording of the two days that we were there.

New Patterns

Okay, I had so much fun working on the April Element for the Month after Month Wall Hanging. Here she is in all her splendor. This one is called "Tulip Bouquet" Isn't she a cutie? A Bit About Life

I hope everyone is settled into the New Year of 2009. It looks like we have had the last of the big snow storms here in southeast Idaho. I shouldn't speak too soon, though. We could have major snow storms STILL! At least the roads are not icy. FOR NOW!

My husband Roger and I are Cub Masters for our cub scouting unit. It is almost time for another pack meeting. The theme this month is A-MAZE-ing games. This will be a fun time for these young boys. We feel like we are grandparents to 20! It makes us feel young, except when Pack meeting is over, then we feel older than we should! Wish us luck!

Quilting Views and Tips

Our yearly quilt show will be the 27th and 28th of this month. I will be giving two demonstrations. One on foundation paper piecing and the other will be how to embellish with fabric chenille. I will have the pattern available for the chenille wall hanging by the next newsletter. It is turning out REALLY fun! I'll give a small hint... it is very "springy" looking.... :o)

I also finished quilting the Disappearing Nine Patch. I have added a close-up of how I quilted it. I quilted Iris flowers into the blocks. I wish you could see it up close and personal. It turned out very nice, IMHO (in my humble opionion).

Here are two quilting tips for using your batting. Please enjoy:

I take a "hunk" of leftover batting and pin it over my shoulder when sewing. Then, as you snip off those threads. tiny fabric nips, etc. etc., you just put them on top of the batting where they cling very well. After your sewing session is complete. you simply unpin the batting from your shoulder and toss it all neatly away.. It puts an end to all those little thread nips. fabric snips, etc all over the sewing room floor, as well as the table top. - Kathi in Michigan

I have a ton of cotton batting. One night I was online with a friend complaining that I didn't have a design wall. She asked me if I had any cotton batting and I said of course. Well, the rest is history. My design wall is cotton batting on the only bare wall I have, right next to my cutting table. It is amazing how much easier it is to see what I am doing...lol. - Carol

A Bit About Life

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We had a fantastic Christmas. We just returned on New Years day from a wonderful trip. We went to Zion National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon, and Glen Canyon Dam. We were able to take some beautiful pictures. I'll show you a couple of my favorites. The snow in these parks really added to the beauty. We were also able to visit with family in New Mexico in Farmington. We spent a day in Durango, Colorado while we were in Farmington.

It is good to be home, but loved our trip. I am anxious to get back to sewing. I have missed that. I did take my computer along and was able to design some fun patterns.

There are still a few BOM patterns left to finish the quilt that was started in 2008. The #15 pattern will be going out to those who signed my guestbook for the BOM patterns. There is also some more GOOD news. I am starting a new series for 2009. The quilt is called Beautiful in Black. A Bit About Life

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow! That is right, it has been snowing the last 2 days here in southeast Idaho. It is beautiful! The downside is the the terrible road conditions. But, as long as I can stay close to a warm fire, it is the best! I do love the beauty of new fallen snow.

I have been able to squeeze in a little quilting time among the making of Christmas Stockings. We have a quilt show in January at our local library. This year the challenge was issued to make a black and white quilt block with either bright yellow, red or purple fabric as the accent color. I chose yellow as my accent color. If I get time, I would like to do more with the red and purple. But for now, this is what I have. I really like this combination! What do you think?

We are also making charity quilts to donate to local charities. I had so much fun with this. I acquired some of my mother's stash when she passed away. She had this cute panel and had cut out a lot of "red" squares of fabric for a project but never got to finish it. I got out my trusty rotary cutter and squared these up and added them to the panel. Then I found some blue fabric for a second border. This was so fun to think of my sweet mom as I made this quilt top. She would have loved it to go to some child who is in need of a warm quilt to help comfort them. I felt as though she was helping me with this project. I do miss our crafting times together. Anyway, here is the quilt top we did together.

Christmas Stockings

This time of year is always so much fun! I love making Christmas Stockings. Especially, personalizing them. As I add the name to a particular design, it is fun to think about this person that I haven't met and what their likes are.

The most popular stocking this year has been Mr. Santa. This shouldn't come as any surprise, right? I am working on a cute snowman pattern and as soon as I get him just right, I'll post his picture.

Quilting Tips

Here are a few great tips I found.

For quilt labels, set your machine to alphabet stitching and sew your name and other information right into the fabric. Quilt over the top of the lettering. - Carolyn in New Zealand

To make sure that the label you add to your quilt cannot be removed, stitch to the back of the quilt before the quilting is completed. Quilt through the label. - Noreen in Massachusetts

Sewing all day can lead to millions of little threads on the floor. Not wanting to vacuum, I put two of the lint rollers on a paint roller and attached the handle to an extension handle. I run this over the carpet, bingo, it's tidy for tomorrow! I store it by hanging it on a hook behind the door. - Jacque in California

A Bit About Life:

For those of you in the USA, I hope that each one of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I also hope that your preparations for the coming Christmas holiday is filled with happiness. I try to remember the reason for the season and not stress too much. I hope you do the same.

Thanksgiving was a fun occasion for our family. We spent the day at my daughter's home in Boise. We had 7 of our 9 grandchildren there. Our son from Portland came and our daughter and husband came with her 3 children. It was a day of feasting and playing games. The grandkids had so much fun playing with their cousins. We hit the Black Friday sales on Friday and got some of our Christmas shopping done. My daughters were up at 3:00 am. My husband and I didn't get going until around 6:00 am. (Early enough for me!)

I have to show you the potholder that I made as a gift exchange for our quilt guild. I decided I wanted to do something with the old crocks. Well, anyway, this is my interpretation. I hope whoever gets it will like it. I added yo-yo's with button centers as flowers.

A Bit About Life

Today is a busy day for me. I have been asked to play the organ for a funeral. It is rather sad. This young man was taken by cancer. He had just gotten married. He actually married in the ICU of the hospital. He has suffered a long time with this disease and is finally at peace. It is never easy for those left behind, but thankfully there is life after death and we have a kind Father in Heaven who watches over us.

On a brighter note, I attended our quilting guild on Tuesday. There is a lot going on. We are preparing for a January Quilt Show which will be at our local library. This is the 10th anniversary of this quilt show. All in the guild will be making pin cushions to give away. These are really neat and useful. I'll add a picture and a pattern in the TIPS section of this newsletter.

We are also making 12 inch blocks in black, white, and yellow. These will be voted on by the public and the winner will receive a prize. I need to get my creative juices flowing for this one.

We will also be making charity baby quilts to give away to various charities. This will be fun. I remember taking our diabetic granddaughter to her diabetic camp one year. When we checked her in there was a stack of quilts on the table. She was told that she could choose one of them and keep it for herself. What a wonderful act of kindness! It is my turn to "pay it forward".

I have been working on a Disappearing 9 patch quilt and also a log cabin quilt. I have both tops done and ready to quilt. Below are pictures of both.

Fun Things to Make for Christmas:

I am always looking for things that I can make for Christmas. I have a few ideas for you. Some are quick gifts to have on hand for that unexpected gift to give. Others you can make for someone special or keep for yourself.

I am having so much fun with this Month after Month Quilted Wall hanging. The January element is available. So far, I have the patterns for December and January available. Below is a picture with the January element. I named this one "Dressed for Snow" She turned out so cute!! These are the pictures of the pattern. The "real" thing is always so much cuter! Here are the pin cushions that we are making. These are so fun and useful! Scroll down to the TIPS section and I'll give you instructions for them. These are so simple!!

These Needle Books are especially fun to make. They work up fast and are great for anyone who needs their needles, pins, and other sewing supplies in one place. These little books fit so nicely in your purse. The pages are made from felt and the book is made from scraps and paper pieced. Click HERE to get the pattern. There are 5 different patterns included for you to choose from or make ALL five!!
This is my most favorite purse!! I don't like carrying a huge purse, but I like lots of pockets to keep everything organized. This purse pattern has 5 pockets. The picture below will give you an idea of the pockets. The flap has a zippered pocket and there is another zippered pocket above the back pocket. The flap is made from a quilt block. There are 3 quilt blocks to choose from for the flaps. Or again, make all 3!! I love changing purses and having a few on hand makes it possible. I have received so many compliments on my purses! This little Scrappy Bear would be a fun gift for a child or as part of your own decorations. I can imagine him in Christmas fabric! His legs and arms are buttoned on so you are able to easily position him where ever you want to place him. It has been pretty busy around here as it always is for everyone getting ready for the holiday season. I hope you are on schedule for the holidays!

Quilting Tips:

Easy Pin Cushion: Cut a piece of fabric that measures 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch square. Fold it right sides together to make a triangle. Stitch around the triangle, leaving an opening for turning. Turn triangle inside out. Stuff until you can comfortable fit the ends of the triangle around your index finger. Stitch opening closed after stuffing. Stitch the triangle ends together. There you have a handy pin cushion!

Here are 50 tips from readers of McCalls's Quilting Magazine. I thought they were very worthy to pass on!

FABRIC CHOICE AND PREPARATION
1. Don't be afraid to use color in your quilts.

2. Pick a print that grabs your attention. Coordinate colors around that print.

3. Always pick a fabric that is a little different from the others to add interest.

4. Choose fabrics from the same collection. They usually blend well and have a variety of lights, mediums, and darks, as well as different scales.

5. Purchase extra fabric (1/4 yd. or more). You might make a mistake or need an extra strip or two. Plans for quilts change!

6. When shopping for fabrics, take the pattern. Also, tack fabric samples to a 3" x 6" index card so you can find just the right fabric by comparing it to what you already have.

7. Wash and press fabric before cutting.

8. When prewashing fabrics, clip the corner of each piece to prevent a big, tangled, spider web mess when the machine stops!

9. To straighten fabric after washing, in preparation for cutting, fold across the bias and pull. Get a friend to help. Pull at the fold and every few inches out to the points.

QUALITY COUNTS
10. Get the right tools

11. Use high-quality, 100% cotton fabrics.

ACCURACY MATTERS
12. Press as you go.

13. Be sure to cut accurate templates.

14. Cut accurately when using the rotary cutter.

15. Do whatever is necessary to achieve accurate 1/4" seams. You'll have fewer headaches!

16. Learn to sew accurate strip sets.

17. Be sure to square up each block before stitching them together. Square up your quilt top before adding borders.

18. "From my dad, a master cabinetmaker, MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE."

WORKSPACE AND ORGANIZATION SUGGESTIONS
19. Use a flannel board or design wall and place fabrics/blocks on it while piecing.

20. Stick a small stack of Post-It Notes beside the presser foot as a 1/4" seam allowance guide.

21. On your sewing machine table, draw two lines, one for the stitching line and the second, 1/4" to the right. These will help with machine piecing accuracy.

22. Use a scrap of fabric for a starter when chain piecing.

23. Speed up your piecing by chain stitching.

24. Always have your seam ripper nearby.

LEARN THE BASICS
25. Choose patterns with clear instructions and useful diagrams.

26. Read through the pattern before you start cutting.

27. Make a practice block.

28. Learn proper pressing techniques!

29. Use diagonal seams when piecing binding to cut down on bulk.

30. Learn how to properly turn corners when stitching binding to your quilt.

31. Learn the difference between half-square triangles and quarter-square triangles. Then learn the calculations for adding seam allowances (finished dimension + 7/8" for half-square triangles and +1 1/4" for quarter-square triangles).

32. Sew the hanging sleeve onto your quilt while attaching the binding.

BE EASY ON YOURSELF
33. Don't feel guilty about starting a new project even though you already have lots in the works.

34. It is OK to have a mistake in your quilt. No quilt is perfect.

35. When learning to hand quilt, focus on making even stitches, not on stitch length. Long stitches look just as good as short ones, provided that they are the same size.

36. Quilt with your friends.

37. Practice. Have patience with yourself.

TRY NEW TECHNIQUES
38. Be open to trying new methods.

39. Take classes at your local quilt shop.

40. Buy a rotary cutter. They have revolutionized quiltmaking.

41. Follow the step by step rotary cutting instructions provided on the McCall's Quilting web site.

42. Learn to use a grid for making half-square triangles.

43. Make flying geese with rectangles and squares, using the corner sew and flip method.

44. Use safety pins to baste your quilts, and close them with the aid of a grapefruit spoon.

45. Learn to make bias binding

46. Binding can be done with straight-of-grain strips.

47. Join a quilting forum to get ideas from other quilters.

48. Make use of all the quilting links on the Internet!

49. Listen to advice from experienced quilters, then listen to your inner self. Don't be afraid to try something different.
50. Remember that each quilt is different, each quilter is different, and all have value.

A Bit About Life

It has been a beautiful fall with only ONE snow storm here in Idaho. I am certain there are more to come. I hope everyone is registered to vote and will vote for the candidate that would do the best for our country. It is hard this year, for me anyway, to know which is the best candidate. Speaking of candidates, you may enjoy this picture. My mother in law and father in law were in Durango on Friday when John McCain was there. She got her picture taken by the press. She said she stood in line from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm. She is 82 and was very tired! She didn't particulary like the sign they gave her to hold up. Anyway, she got a little write up and her picture in the Rocky Mountain News!

I use an electric personal shaver as an electric seam ripper. Just gently pull the two pieces of fabric apart so that you can see the threads, and touch the shaver to the threads. It really comes apart quickly and easily and what a time saver! - Cassie in Louisiana

When you need to rip out a seam, use your seam ripper and cut a stitch about every half inch or so. Then pull the thread from the other side, and it will pull out easily without distorting your fabric. You will have to pick out the small pieces of thread, but that's easier than trying to rip out a seam that will distort your block. - Marie in Mississippi

Getting small block pieces from the cutting table to the machine can cause arrangements to be out of order sometimes. I had my husband cut a piece of paneling about 16" square. I used a thin piece of batting and put this on top of the piece of paneling. Then I covered the batting with 100% cotton about 2" bigger than the paneling. I then wrapped about 1" of fabric all the way around to the back side and hot glued it down on the back. Makes a mini design board portable. Used it when I was teaching some quilt classes so the ladies could pass it around and see how the blocks were laid out.

We were into a perfectly GREAT fall and HOLY COW!! We got hit with a big snow storm this weekend! I could hear "Walkin' in a Winter Wonder Land" in my head for two days. My DH was in the forest when it hit hard and had to chain up his 4 wheel drive to get out. I'm glad that he made it okay! I do like Winter, but it sure seems that summer didn't stay long enough!

The grandkids are glad to be back in school after their two week "Spud" harvest vacation. From the sounds of it, the farmers had a good harvest here in Southeast Idaho. That means GOOD Idaho Potatoes for all!

New Quilting Patterns:

I am so excited! I have had this idea for months and I have finally got the first installment of a New Quilting Pattern. It is called Month After Month. It is a progressive wall hanging that changes each month. The pattern is perfect for beginners and seasoned quilters alike. The "Base" is available now! I will give you a sneak preview of a couple of the elements that go with it. I have it hanging on my front room wall and I get so many comments. I hope you like it!

To make sure that the label you add to your quilt cannot be removed, stitch to the back of the quilt before the quilting is completed. Quilt through the label. - Noreen in Massachusetts

I store my many wall hangings by wrapping them around the paper tubes from wrapping paper (right side out). Then I place them in a pillow case and that keeps them from rolling off the shelf. - Carol in Michigan

Use half of a regular wooden clothespin to finger-press the seams of small applique or paper-pieced blocks. Just a few passes over the seam, easy and quick. - Rebecca in Idaho

Leave your paper foundations in place until all blocks have been sewn into a quilt top. The result will be greater precision and less distortion due to fabric being stretched when the paper foundation is removed.

Hmmmm let's see.... October, November, December!! Can you believe it's only that long until Christmas? It seems that I procrastinate until the last minute in getting ready for the BIG day! It seems that the INSPIRATION comes at the last minute because of my PROCRASTINATION! But at any rate... it turns to DESPERATION! LOL!! I hope you are more prepared than I am!

Here in Southeast Idaho we have "Spud" harvest. For those of you who don't know what a spud is, it is a potato. The kids get out for 2 weeks in order to help in the potato harvest. It has been the age old story of whether the kids really need to be out, especially the grade school kids. Machinery has taken over the harvest jobs for the most part. I remember as a kid in junior high school and high school being able to earn quite a bit of money (in those days) working on the potato combine. It was very dirty work, but we seemed to have fun and the extra money was GREAT! Here in Shelly, we celebrate Spud Day every year. Our Spud day was last weekend. It rained CATS and DOGS!!! Here is a link about Spud Day . What I was getting to about kids and Spud Harvest is.... I have 3 grandchildren at home from school to entertain! Do you have any ideas?

QUILTING TIPS:

Here are some wonderful tips from Quilter's Around the World. Hope you will use some of these!!

I made a design board from a 4'x8' sheet of foam insulation (the kind you use under siding for your house) for my sewing room. I cut it down to the size I needed, then I covered it with a flannel- backed tablecloth (flannel side up). I stapled the edges of the tablecloth along the back. You can also use glue. Just lay your quilting blocks on the board…no need to pin! - Barbara in West Virginia

If you want an unusual heart shape or a square shape check out the local Scrapbooking shop. They have some interesting shapes that would be great for quilting. - Ernestine in Colwell

I ask for a empty cardboard from a fabric store (the one fabric is wrapped around) and I pad it with batting, cover with muslin. I use it to iron my pieces right next to my machine. It saves me a lot of getting up and down to do that and it sure saves time. I can also pin my pattern to it, a small design wall. - Arlene in New York

A Bit About Life:

It is becoming one of my favorite times of the year, but a busy time! The garden is winding down somewhat. I do have a BUMPER crop of fresh tomatoes. Does anyone want some? :o)

We were able to attend our Southeast Idaho State Fair. We indulged in our usual corn on the cob, Tiger Ears (a large piece of fry bread sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar), Funnel Cakes, a Chicken and Rice bowl, and a smoked turkey leg. All topped off with Lemonade Slush! We had my husband’s brother, wife and daughter from California go with us. We walked until we could hardly take another step!

I love visiting the craft building and see all of the beautiful quilts that were entered! There are definitely some VERY talented people in SE Idaho! I hope that you were able to attend a fair in your own state!

This Saturday, I had my 3 grandkids over. My grandson is a Cub Scout and needed a woodworking project for one of his requirements. I told him I would help him build a birdhouse. Well, there were 3 eager kids that wanted to make one as well, so I got out my Shopsmith Saw and helped them build THREE birdhouses! It was a lot of work, but we had a fun time!

QUILTING TIPS:

Here are more great quilting tips. I hope you find them useful. These all have to do with “marking”. Can you guess what I am doing? Yup, marking a quilt!

Slivers of soap are great for marking quilting lines. - Barbara in Tennessee

I keep a mug in my sewing room, along with a tooth brush. I put water in the cup use the brush to dab & remove blue marker marks on my fabric. Works much better than spraying water, and you can put the water just where you want it. - Charlene in Oregon

When sharpening a quilt marking pencil, use the larger hole on a two hole manual sharpener. This will give you a very short but extremely sharp point. The point won't break off easily as with the "normal" size and your pencil will last longer. - Rhonda in Washington

Just a little bit about me:

WOW! September is here, already. It is starting to cool off here in Idaho. We are hoping to get one more trip down the Snake River before winter sets in. There is not much better than a peacful day on the river, a dry fly floating on the water and the bonus is catching that big fish on that little tiny white fly! (Piecing a quilt is a VERY close second!) What is it that you all love to do?

For most of you, school is in session. I hope you have settled into the "school" schedule. For myself, it is the joy of our little grandkids faces as they tell us all about their day at school. My daughter was telling about taking our 5 year old grandson to school. He didn't cry, but his 3 year old brother did! He just didn't know what he was going to do without him. I thought that was very sweet!

I have been picking beans and tomatoes from our small, but productive garden. Tomorrow will be canning day for sure! We planted 2 apple trees. One last year and one this year. BOTH of them have apples on them!

TIPS:

Speaking of canning.... did everyone get their fabric canned? The last newsletter I told you about putting my fabric scraps by color in canning jars. This is the best thing I have done in a LONG time. I will repost the picture for those who didn't see it last newsletter. Click on the picture for details.

Here are some other tips I have found. Some of them I have tried, others I am going to try!

To save computer space, storage space and also paper when downloading free patterns from the internet. I store them for a short time on my computer and then copy them onto a CD for storage. Each CD is labeled differently. For example, Applique, BOM, Mystery Quilts, Christmas quilts, etc. If there is a particular designer I like or web site that I follow year to year, they get a CD all their own. For example, Block Central has a CD all it's own. You can store a lot of quilts on 1 CD.

Always remember that the patterns you download off the internet are for personal use only and not for commercial use. And always give the designer the credit for their work!! - Truth in Pennsylvania

Mid August Newsletter

Just a bit of my personal life:

I know that most of you are getting geared up for the school year. That means some free time and also time to be taxi drivers, tutors, coaches and whatever else comes with having kids in school. I wish you the best school year however you spend your time. Just make some time for yourself!!

Some of my grandkids are off to school and what excitement! I have two 5 year old grandchildren starting kindergarten. One of them started yesterday and the other will start next week. This is a hard time for moms and grandmas because we realize our little babies are really growing up! All of them are so excited to learn and make new friends. Those that are in school LOVE their teachers!! My hat goes off to ALL teachers who put so many hours to give our children and grandchildren a wonderful experience to learn and grow!

My garden is finally producing! Our tomato plants are as tall as the fence! We have NEVER had them get that tall! There are lots of tomatoes. I hope the weather will cooperate until they all turn red! We love fresh tomatoes from our garden! I hope you enjoy some fresh produce this fall!

Tips:

I have a wonderful tip for those of you who like to save scraps. I know that I have a hard time throwing away any scrap that is any bigger than a postage stamp! I would throw them in a drawer and then rummage through them trying to find the perfect color. It would take me forever! Below you can see what I have done! I can't tell you how this has made my foundation paper piecing so much easier! Click on the picture for the article on Making a Fabric Palette and a larger view of the picture.

If you like to applique, here are a few nice tips I found. Thank you to each of these people for great ideas!

Before I press freezer paper to my fabric, I punch a small hole in the paper. After I have finished the applique, I can put my needle in the hole on the freezer paper, and it pulls right off. - Ellie in Idaho

When doing hand applique and traveling, simply place your bobbins with the color threads needed and place them in a medicine bottle. Drill tiny holes through the top of bottle and pull up your thread colors. They will stay neat and easy to use! One medicine bottle holds approximately 7 bobbins of color. - Nancy in Florida

I like to applique but to applique onto a block draws it up and therefore it is no longer square. To counteract this I aways cut my base block at least a half inch bigger than I want the finished block to be, than square it up after it is done. - Ferrell in California

I can't believe how much fun I have been having! I can't seem to quit making this next little item! Since I have made my Fabric Palette, it has been so easy to pick out color fabrics for these little Needle Books. These little books are so handy! Keep your needles, a few pins and safety pins in them. You will never need to take your pincushion, box of safety pins or your package of needles to do a project. This little Needle Book is all you will need along with your scissors and project. And they are so CUTE!! They make a nice little quick gift as well! Just some Personal Stuff:

I can't believe that August is here already. August is my birthday month which means ANOTHER year older!! (Hopefully another year wiser..) I don't have any of my own children starting school this year, but I do have some grandchildren. For our area, school will be starting August 14th! That is just way too early, in my opinion. Two of our GK's will be starting kindergarten. It is so fun to have them be so excited for school to start. I have to admit that they are still babies in my eyes. I hope there are a lot of fun plans for the free time (what is FREE time?) you will have when the kiddos go back to school. At least plan to have a quilting project or two in mind!

Mid July Newsletter

Just some personal stuff:

What a great time we had during the 4th of July! We had a wonderful firework display and a great time with 4 of our grandchildren and their parents. As we grow older, we realize how blessed we are to have our family!

Tomorrow we will probably be touring Yellowstone National park with 3 of our other grandchildren. I can't wait!

I hope you are having a wonderful summer with your family!

Quilting Tips:

I have been using my thimble a lot lately. I find it flying off my finger all to frequently! I found this tip this morning and thought I would give it a try. As I said, I haven't tried it yet, but I am for NOT buying a new thimble! LOL!! Here is the tip:

"If your thimble is a little too large for your finger, remove the thimble, lick your finger and put the thimble back on...your thimble will not fly off your finger again."

This is one that I want to try! Hope you will find it useful as well!

"I make my own variegated thread in ANY two- or three-color combinations I want. I just thread all of the threads through my machine and through a #14 JEANS NEEDLE. (It has a large hole, and is very sharp.) If you do not have extra spool holders on your machine, just place each of the extra threads in a heavy mug near the back of your machine, and thread the machine in it's usual manner. I use my "usual" thread, but embroidery thread is thinner, if you would prefer that. The results are so exciting!"

Happy July!

To those of you who celebrate Independence day, I hope your July activities are safe! I know there have been so many fires in certain areas and many more are predicted. I wish you all safe!! We have had a wet winter which has caused more grasses to grow in our forests and fields. This grass will dry and be a certain tinder base for wild fires. I'm praying for everyone's safety! We plan to have a quiet celebration here with kids and grandkids who are able to come. I love this time of year for reunions with family and getting together for outdoor activites with friends. I hope you are having a great summer, winter, fall or spring; whatever season you are in, make it safe and happy!

I have been having fun creating mixed with tending 3 fun grandkids. They are all so willing to "help" grandma. They are my best critics! When I was making "Scrappy", they thought he was going to be a DUCK! LOL!! But after the ears, arms and legs were attached, they changed their mind. Happy June everyone!

Just a personal note to begin with. Today is May 29th and it is my 37th anniversary! I can't believe it has been that long! It seems like yesterday that we were married. It is great to have such a wonderful companion and soul mate!

I hope the summer (or winter, depending on where you are) is going well for you! We mowed our lawn and got 10 bags of grass from a SMALL lawn! That is telling me that summer has finally arrived in Idaho!

I have been so busy working out this FUN pattern, so without further adieu you will find the picture below. I have been searching for years for the perfect handbag. I have never found it until I made it myself! Now doesn't that seem to be how we have to do things? This handbag has FIVE pockets. Two of them are zippered. The bag is fully lined and has a bit of batting and interfacing to make it sturdy. The added quilt block design on the flap is just the ticket for a very CUTE (I'm sure there is a better word, I just can't think of it right now! LOL!) handbag! There are three quilt block patterns included with the handbag pattern. I made three of these handbags in three days, they are so FUN! Well anyway, here is a picture. Click HERE for more details.

Mid April Newsletter

I think spring has finally arrived in Idaho! We have had 60 degree weather! (at least ONE day!) Hopefully more will come. At least the SNOW is about gone! April is half gone and soon a new month will be here! How time flies when you are having fun, right?

Last Saturday, was an eventful day! I was able to get together with a group of people to work on some humanitarian projects. I am so happy to report that we were able to complete 20 quilts (we tied them), 50 school bag kits, 50 wooden toy cars (we had a youth group paint them beforehand), 50 fabric worms (these are CUTE and the kids got involved in stuffing them) and some picture books! This was such a "feel good" activity, knowing that some people in need would be blessed. Makes me so thankful for ALL that I have! If you haven't been able to get involved in such a project, it is so worth your time to seek one out!

Just a few reminders of what is going on at Quilting For Less. Remember that we have FREE shipping until the end of April. I Say BAN Daylight Savings Time!!

Let me explain one reason I HATE daylight savings. This is only ONE mind you!

Yesterday was Saturday, right? Well, we usually go to bed pretty early because we get up at 4:30 or 5:00 in the morning. Yesterday was an exception because it was Saturday and we could try to sleep in on Sunday. Sleeping in usually doesn't happen because of that DARN built in alarm clock!!

We went to sleep around 1:00 AM which is NOT our usual routine. We are usually in bed and asleep by about 10:00 pm. We were sleeping soundly and the alarm went off. Roger (dh) rolls over and says, "It's 7:30 according to this clock. I knew that it really meant 7:00 because we set it ahead a half hour so we can listen to the music or whatever as we"gently" wake up. When the music goes off, we know that it is REALLY time to get up! I know that sounds crazy, but that's just how it is!

As we were listening to the music on the radio, I knew that I had better get up and get a move on! The reason being; I play the organ for congregational singing in our church and of course I need to be there early. Church starts at 9:00 am and choir (which I like to support) begins at 8:15 AM.

So... I drag myself out of bed and in a mostly comatose state, head for the bathroom and a bath to try and wake myself up. I hear Roger getting in the shower as well, so I know we won't be late, if we hurry.

I get out of the bath, get dressed and am drying my hair, when Roger comes down the stairs. He looks at me and says do you know what time it is? I look at the clock and it is barely 6:30 am. I say, "What the heck!?!?" He then tries to accuse me of messing with the alarm clock, which I don't even know how to push the SNOOZE button! Afterall, that's his side of the bed and HIS responsibility!!

We both shake our heads in disbelief that we actually got up an hour earlier than we should have! Still we hadn't determined who the culprate was that set the clock ahead and HOUR!

Well, now that we had plenty of time, we could have a leisurely breakfast of homemade omelets with lots of mushrooms, onions, green and red peppers and Anaheim chili peppers. YUM!! Roger proceeded to making omelets while I finished getting ready and run through the music I would be playing.

We finished our our omelets, OJ and toast just in time to brush our teeth and head out the door. It is now 8:08 AM. We will arrive at the church easily by 8:13 AM.

As we were driving up to the church, we saw the parking lot full of cars. We thought that a little odd because we are the first ward to meet at the building on Sunday. We didn't think too much about it, though, because often there are early morning meetings, but usually not that MANY cars! We went to our usual parking spot and it was taken! Roger said, "I am a little worried!" I was confused, but absolutely knew that it was NOT time for church to start, yet!! We hadn't had choir practice and was thinking that we probably wouldn't have a very big turn out for choir with all these people at this meeting. We had been gone to Las Vegas the week before and obviously missed the announcement of a meeting early Sunday morning.

As we were getting out of our car, another lady pulled up that we knew and got out of her car in a big hurry and ran into the church. We looked at each other and said, "She is in a hurry!" We were getting even more worried by now, but I still couldn't believe that church was starting an hour early!

As we walked into the church we could hear an opening prayer being broadcast over the speaker system. We again looked at each other in confusion. Roger went to the door of the overflow area to peek in. He looked at me wide-eyed and said, "That is OUR ward!"

We went in and found a seat at the VERY back. I looked up and a dear friend was at the organ!! It takes me a while... I was still confused!! Roger leaned up to a friend sitting in front of us and asked, "What's going on? Why is church an hour early?" He looked at him like he had worms coming out of his nose and said one word.... "DAYLIGHT SAVINGS". (Actually that is 2 words) I asked Roger what he said and he repeated the same 2 words.

To say the least, I was totally EMBARRASSED!! After the SECOND hymn, I caught the eye of the friend who was taking MY place. She came down from the organ to sit with her family, but took a detour out of the chapel and back to where we were sitting. I apologized profusely to her and tried to explain what had happened. She laughed and assured me that it was okay. I told her the least I could do was play the LAST hymn!!

Okay, now you know WHY there should be a BAN on daylight savings!! I would like to know your thoughts?

Just finished the pillow. The quilt block came from a swap by our quilt group. I added the border edges by using flying geese blocks. Quilting done in the ditch and free motion quilting on the border and the center snowball block. Very FUN project!

Easter is just around the corner, can you believe it? I stitched up this fun postcard using foundation paper piecing. He turned out so cute! I am offering this in my newsletter as a FREEBIE. I have been working on some new projects. These are what I call Quilt Block Clocks. These are turning out so fun! I have a few more up my sleeve that I am working on as well. You can find them on my Clock page.

I was able to visit some fun Quilt shops in Las Vegas while we were there. One of them was the Fabric Boutique. Lots of very fun and unique things there! Nice people, too. I could not believe all the samples hung everwhere! Very helpful and friendly folks!

Then I stopped by the Christmas Goose. What a nice little shop with a ton of fabric and beautiful examples everywhere as well! Very helpful and friendly people here, too!

Then it was on to Nancy's Quilt Shop. There I found beautiful fabrics and yarns. They had a lot of new and fresh ideas as well.

Wish I could have spent a few more days at the other shops there. It was lots of fun. The best part was my husband helped me find them all and insisted that I go shop and have fun! What a LOVE!!

Time to come back to reality and get dinner on the stove! :o(

Ben Aflack and me at the poker table... Wish he played as good as he looks! Didn't win a whole lot on that hand!

Lucy is just about to take that wooden spoon to the side of Roger's head! I think she said, "No TASTING!"

Okay, we had a lot of fun in Vegas! It is good to be home, though. We could'nt stand too much more fun. We have to clear our heads from all the tabacco smoke!

Viva Las Vegas

We have been here in LV since Sunday. What can I say about LV? Well, my niece and her family live here, it is a TON warmer than IDAHO! It is a big mass of hussle, bussle, especially on the strip. We are staying at the Monte Carlo. I have to keep looking for all the smoke damage. When we walked in the front door, it smelled like a funeral home! They have really deoderized the place. I would sure hate to be the contracting company who started the fire! OUCH!! Some lady told us that the guy who started the fire is banned from setting foot on the Monte Carlo premises. Don't know how true that is, but ya know....

We have seen Lance Burton's magic show. We are going to the wax museum today to get some fun pictures. We have eaten absolutely TOO MUCH!! How can you not with all the buffets? We have done our usual timeshare travels. Thanks to them, we have eaten and seen shows for free and have a hundred dollars in our pocket. Who says you can't make money in Vegas?? LOL!!

We are going to see Nathan Burton tonight also. He won on America's got talent. There is also the guy that does the puppet ventriloquist thing, but don't know if we will see him or not.

I have been doing a little quilt shop hopping. I will get the name of the one that I really liked later.. (my memory is failing me) :o) Anywho, got some great ideas!

It has been fun to get away and have some together time!

Home from Disney World

We made it home from Disney world last night. We had such a great time. We took three of our grandkids which in itself was so worth the trip. Just to see their eyes as big as saucers was so worth it! The last day we let them get their faces painted. Here are pictures of Hailey and Tyghelyn and Hunter. They didn't want to wash their faces, EVER! Thank goodness for digital camaras!

Valentine Postcards

Today has been a relaxing day! Christmas is over and I am finally able to play. I thought a fun Valentine postcard would be fun to get started on. Here is a pic of the postcard. It is pretty simple but fun to make. The heart could be embelished with embroidered words of "I Love You", "Be Mine" or other Valentine sayings. Here is the pattern for this Valentine.

Paper Pieced Quilt - Kites

This picture doesn't doo the quilt justice, but hope everyone gets the idea. I did the kites using the foundation paper piecing method. The kites in the corner are also paper pieced Then I added the checkerboard border using 1 inch squares. I am giving this one to my 5 yearold grandson.

A new year is upon us

This past year has been a whirlwind of excitement and frustrations. All in all I count my blessings for each and everything that has been granted to me. I am aware of the omnisience (sp) of a kind and loving Father in Heaven who grants me trials as blessings. I am thankful for the trials I have experienced this year. They have made me stronger and most of all more compassionate and charitable toward my fellow men. I thank Him for my talents and abilities, for a loving family who in thick or thin sticks together for each other. WOW! I am truly blessed!

We just returned from 5 days in NM visiting with family. It was a fun time remembering the past that we thought was forgotten. We played a lot of games and laughed until we cried. In some instances we just cried in empathy for trials of the past year.

When it all boils down to it, I realize that family is my most precious comodity in this life. We must treasure each other and make life good for all that we meet. Big things are of little importance, it is the little things, such as a smile, a kind word, a hug or a simple , "I care".

My wish is that we all focus on the "I care" this year. What a better world it would be if we just cared a little more.

My Quilt for Granddaughter Ashley

It is almost ready for the FAT man to appear and like everyone else, I have been busily making things for those we love and care about. This quilt I made for my Granddaughter, Ashley. She is 14 and is into PINK. I thought this quilt was just the right sofistication ( is that a word?) for her. I love the black and white with the accent of the hot pink. I hope she will love it!

I am a bit of a rebel when it comes to patterns and such. I like to put my own twist on things. As I was putting together the blocks, they were all supposed to point in the same direction. I really liked the way I arranged the blocks to make the stars and the crosses. I hope you enjoy looking! The picture really doesn't do it justice. It's probably my picture taking abilities or DISABILIES!

If you are like me, Christmas is EXHAUSTING! All those last minute shopping trips, and in my case, slick icy roads are not all that fun! I would prefer to sit at my sewing machine and create some fun things. Saturday, I made some hotpads for my mother-in-law. I think my FIL will probaby use them more. He is a baker and loves to be in the kitchen. Here is a picture of them.. The finished block is 8" which makes a very nice size for a hotpad.

Here are a few tips on how to make a hot pad.

Do NOT use batting! The batting will tend to get very hot when next to a hot pan coming out of the oven. I use my old towels, hand towels or washcloths instead of batting. I usuall put two layers of towell material between the quilt block and the backing. Then I use a polyester filament thread as my top thread and a thread to match the backing fabric in the bobbin.

Just a Start

Okay, people, watch out! I am starting a new blog! I have been buried at my computer for the last 3 months working on my website. It is almost ready! All I lack is the shopping cart to get fixed and I am open for business!! Anyone can still browse, though. A lot of interesting stuff can be found. The website is http://www.quiltingforless.com/. On a personal note, we just returned from our daughter Amber's. We spent the Thanksgiving weekend with 6 of our grandkids. It was so fun except for the leaving part! Our little 3 year old (who just turned 3 on Thanksgiving day) asked if we could come back tomorrow. That made us very sad! Our son Micah was also there. All in all it was a very fun visit.

We are planning a surprise trip to Disney World the first part of January. We will be taking three of our grandchildren, our son and our daughter. The surprise is for the grandkids. They have NO idea, yet!! It is hard to keep a secret that BIG!! We bought sweatshirts all alike to give to them on Christmas to announce the event. My DH can hardly keep his lips zipped!!
