If you are like me, Christmas is EXHAUSTING! All those last minute shopping trips, and in my case, slick icy roads are not all that fun! I would prefer to sit at my sewing machine and create some fun things. Saturday, I made some hotpads for my mother-in-law. I think my FIL will probaby use them more. He is a baker and loves to be in the kitchen. Here is a picture of them.. The finished block is 8" which makes a very nice size for a hotpad.
Here are a few tips on how to make a hot pad.
Do NOT use batting! The batting will tend to get very hot when next to a hot pan coming out of the oven. I use my old towels, hand towels or washcloths instead of batting. I usuall put two layers of towell material between the quilt block and the backing. Then I use a polyester filament thread as my top thread and a thread to match the backing fabric in the bobbin.

Thanks for the tip about towels--I had never thought of it. I made a couple hotpads using a couple layers of Warm and Natural and it was not near enough!
You are welcome, Rose! A good way to use up those old towels that you should have thrown away, right?
Doesn't the polyester filament thread melt from the heat of a hot pan from the oven?
I have never had any trouble with the "polyester" filament. Now the "Nylon" is a different story! I do use regular cotton thread in the bobbin though. I will keep a watchful eye on whether the thread melts or not. Thanks for the post, Hazel!
